Smartphone Alternatives
We know going phone-less isn’t right for all families. And that’s okay! The majority of challenges associated with smartphones is having access to social media, an internet browser and the app store. Check out these smartphone alternatives. They are a great way to stay connected without the additional features and risks.
-
The Bark Phone
The Bark Phone is the closest alternative to a Smartphone, designed specifically for kids. The Bark includes parental controls pre-installed, such as app management, location tracking, and content filtering, while offering the ability to introduce smartphone functionality over time. It allows social media apps, but has advanced technology that scans text messages and attached photos/videos for potential dangers, whereas an iPhone requires extensive customization and monitoring to ensure children aren’t able to tamper with the limitations that have been set by parents.
-
The Gabb Phone
The Gabb Phone offers basic communication tools like calling and texting without internet access, social media, or an app store. The only apps that are allowed are Gabb’s proprietary apps, such as Gabb Music, Gabb Messages, etc. The Gabb Phone focuses on safety with GPS tracking and minimizes distraction with a simple interface. You can compare the features on the Gabb phone with the Bark phone here.
-
The Pinwheel Phone
The Pinwheel Phone uses a custom operating system that limits features to non-internet-based apps, allowing remote parental management and fostering healthier digital habits without the risks of unrestricted internet access. It has tamper-proof parental controls, blocks access to the internet and social media, but does not have built-in monitoring systems. You can compare the features on the Gabb phone with the Pinwheel phone here.

The Apple Watch
The Apple Watch is an option for people who want the Apple experience and features, but without the distractions of the full iPhone. The Apple Watch limits in-depth communication, due to its small screen and mini keyboard, but it does allow basic internet and social media access, if you enable it. The Apple Watch enhances safety with GPS and emergency features and promotes health with fitness tracking.
-
The Gizmo Watch
The Gizmo Watch is designed specifically for children, with a simple, user-friendly interface and robust parental controls to manage your child’s contacts and GPS location. The Gizmo offers very limited functionality, such as calling and messaging a set list of approved contacts and encourages physical activity with fitness tracking features. Some feel it may not keep pace with a teen’s growing need for technological communication.
-
The Pingo Watch
The Pingo Watch is another wearable option, specifically designed for children, with an easy-to-use interface. It has robust safety features, including GPS tracking and an SOS button for emergencies. The Pingo is limited to basic functionalities, like voice calls and preset text messages, but is equipped with educational games and features to engage younger users. Like the Gizmo, some feel it may not keep pace with a teen’s growing need for technological communication.n goes here
